The Brain that changes Itself
October 2, 2010, 11:30 am

I recommend this book by Dr. Norman Doidge. It is about Neuroplasticity and helps the understanding of the way our brains learn. Each chapter is about a particular persons' problem & how changing the way our nervous system works can improve our quality of life. There are also reports from various Scientists about their exploratory work with people & animals.
Moshe Feldenkrais was using the principles of Neuroplasticity back in the 1940s & 50s before the word was invented. He knew that small, slow movements attracted the Brains' attention (the Weber-Fechner law of Physics) & devised many non-habitual ways to work with clients withh all sorts of difficulties. He developed the Method through solving his own problems with 2 ruptured cruciate ligaments in his left knee. I would love to hear your comments on the book, Regards, Madeleine

This was the most amazing book. I hadn't connected that whole concept of neuroplasticity and brain real estate to Feldenkrais. Very true.

Doidge's story about the mirror box for the missing limb with phantom pain was a real eye opener. Like it was stuck in a contorted pose.

Before I did some Feldenkrais, I would have thought that tension in my shoulders needed equal strength manipulation rather than gentle movement past the resistance.

I found this book very interesting. It shatters the myth that brain function cannot be restored once lost, it just takes longer and a high degree of application. Worth the effort.
